Scuba Diving in Cuba

Cuba is a diver's paradise! With the Atlantic Ocean to the North and the Caribbean Sea to the South, Cuba's pristine dive sites are spread over 3,250 miles of coast including keys and islets.

Within one of the largest and least explored coral reefs in the world, divers can experience caves, tunnels and a phenomenal range of seascapes ... home of dozens of sunken Spanish galleons surrounded by barracudas, rays, whale sharks, turtles, tarpons, damsels, drums, bigeyes, moray eels, parrot fish, snappers, tiger fish, gobies and wrasses. Many of the sites, particularly in the south, are still unexplored.

When choosing a resort you would be wise to consider the weather. The south and west coasts of Cuba are calm all winter (November to April) and the north coast is quieter in the summer (May to September). You'll have the best chance of finding optimum conditions if you pick the right coast in the right season. You needn't worry about sharks in Cuban waters as attacks are extremely rare.

Spearfishing is strictly controlled. Spearguns and gigs are not allowed through customs. Cuban diving instructors are recognized by the CMAS (World Cconfederation of Subaquatic Activities) and only European-made 12- or 15- lite tanks are used. Dive equipment available in Cuba is generally of a high quality and tends to be by Mares, Sherwood and Cressi-Sub. There are decompression chambers at Cardenas, at the Naval Hospital in Habana del Este, and at the Hotel Colony on the Isle of Youth. Other resorts have emerdency arrangements with the Cuban Air Force to fly divers to the nearest chamber.
